Magazine Genres

Genres

A music magazine is a magazine that is dedicated to music and also the culture of music. Most magazines typically include news on music, interviews, photo shoots and can also include reviews on concerts.

There are lots of different genres of music magazines, as everyone has different tastes in music, some examples of these are:

Pop-
Pop magazines normally have a lot of bright colours on them and include a lot of images and different types of fonts. The target audience is normally teenage girls, so there is normally a lot of girly colours and articles to do with make up, hair tips and also celebrity gossip that teenage girls would be interested in. The main image on the magazine would normally be a celebrity who many girls would look up and see as a role model, as well as this person being the main image there would also be some gossip about them inside and stuff that includes their latest fashion trends. The language is very informal in pop magazines, this makes it seem like the magazine is taking to the audience in a very chatty way and this encourages the ready to buy the magazine as it seems easier and more fun to read.

Rock-
Rock is another type of music magazines, these magazines tend to include darker colours such as reds, golds, silvers, blacks and greys. They often include people that are wearing dark colours and have messy clothing and hair, people on the front will normally have tattoos and piercings and sometimes have dark eyeliner and dark makeup. The people/ person on the front will either be just the single artist on their own or the main artists in the band, not normally the whole band. NME is a very popular rock magazine and normally has a main artist on the front is is normally placed behind the masthead, the main colour on this magazine is red, as it is a dark colour but still very eye catching.
Indie-
This genre of music has originated from the UK and is more of a type of music for individuals, for more of a niche target audience. Indie magazines normally include colours such as red and black, this will also be included in the clothing that the artists wear. Props can also be used in indie magazines, props that can be use can be are normally guitars, or guitars being smashed, this shows the quirky side of the musicians. The headlines in indie magazines never tend to interfere with that main article image on the front cover, there is also a lot of headlines all over that pages that shows there is a lot that is included in the magazine. The colours that are included in the text are often colours such as white or yellow, this is a contrasting colour to the reds and blacks and makes it stand out more, also it is easier to read.

mode of address

Mode of address in media

The mode of address is the ways in which relations between addresser and addressee are constructed in a text, for example how music magazines are presented to the audience.

There are four main types of models:
  • 1st person
  • 3rd person
  • Formal
  • Informal
In magazines the mode of address influences choice by using different genres, the format of the magazine and the different target audiences.

There are also features that represent informal text in different ways, such as colloquial language, which can be interpreted as 'slang' also there is expletive language which comes across as informal as it is known for 'swearing'.

Colour and typography

Colour and Typography

The colour and the font have to be sensibly selected because these affected whether you are able to read the magazine or not. This could be a reason why someone wouldn't want to buy a magazine, as they wouldn't be able to read the contents, therefore colours need to be chosen sensibly.

Typography is the art and method of arranging type and type designs. A good level of typography is important in any medium, it has to look presentable, neat and be easy to read. You may not be able to read the magazine if you use a certain font or text size, if you are able to read the magazine at arms length then you have chosen a suitable font and text size.
